Tim Kerr
One Last Race
It’s been 10 years since Tim Kerr suffered a serious stroke while at sea as the Captain of a Canadian Navy warship. Since that fateful day, Tim has not only recovered thanks to the quick action of his crew and the dedicated team at Bruyère’s stroke rehabilitation program, but he has taken every opportunity he can to give back.
When he arrived at Bruyère Tim knew that he had a hard journey of recovery ahead of him but was confident that with hard work and the expertise of the dedicated team at Bruyère he would return home to his life again. Tim spent over a year receiving inpatient and outpatient stroke rehabilitation at Bruyère.
Once he had recovered, Tim felt that he simply had to give back.
Tim has participated in countless events for Bruyère, including multiple races, walking each race proudly in support of Bruyère. Since then, Tim has raised over $25,000 to support Bruyère through his races including the Lumberjack Challenge in 2019 with a cumulative distance of 59.2KM
“My life has changed because of Bruyère. The stroke changed my life in one way, and Bruyère took me out of that place and enabled me to get back to my family—to my wife and kids, and to my life.”
As the largest single site provider of inpatient stroke rehabilitation in the Ottawa area, Bruyère also offers an outpatient program to help patients continue to work on their rehabilitation goals following discharge. Through this program, 85% of our patients returning home to the community annually.
This Tamarack Ottawa Race Weekend was the last time Tim participated in the annual event ahead of a move to Halifax. Although filled with excitement about this next chapter, it is a bittersweet moment when he walked the 10K race to celebrate the gift that these last 10 years have been for him and his family.
“Thanks to Bruyère and everyone else who helped me recover from my stroke, I have been able to live an active life these past 10 years—as a father, husband, brother, son, friend, and colleague. I have been able to help raise my children, to help my family and others navigate life’s challenges, and I have hopefully been a positive influence to others along the way. I am so grateful for the opportunity that Bruyère gave me so many years ago, and I am determined to make the most of it every day.”
