What to Bring on Your First Day

To help you be prepared for any situation during your placement at Bruyère, please make sure you bring:

Your School Photo ID:

You must always wear your school-issued identification in plain sight while on site.

Note: Depending on your placement, you may be required to wear a Bruyère-issued ID badge to access staff-only areas. Your Bruyère contact will inform you if this applies to you and guide you through the process.

Pen and Notepad:
While Bruyère uses an Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system, you may be asked to take notes by hand — for example, during scheduled EMR downtime, training sessions, or while shadowing your preceptor. Helpful for jotting down tasks, site-specific instructions, or reminders.

Comfortable, Closed-Toe Shoes:
Footwear must be professional, secure, and safe for walking in patient areas — sneakers or clinical shoes with rubber soles are ideal.

Appropriate Clothing:
Follow your program’s dress code. If scrubs are required, confirm the colour with your coordinator. Avoid denim, shorts, or casual wear.

A Reusable Water Bottle & Healthy Snacks:
Having water and a snack can help you stay focused.

Your Placement Contact Details:
Keep your supervisor or department contact’s phone number handy in case you’re delayed or need directions.

Remote Placements
If you are completing a remote or virtual placement, requirements may differ slightly. Your contact at Bruyère will confirm if any specific processes (e.g., access to systems, privacy training, ID credentials) are needed. Please follow all instructions provided to ensure you’re set up for success.
