About:

Amy Hsu, PhD, is an Investigator at the Bruyère Health Research Institute and holds a uOttawa Brain and Mind-Bruyère Health Research Institute Chair in Primary Health Care Dementia Research. She is also a Lecturer in the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Ottawa. Her research uses population-level health administrative data to examine older adults' health and health care needs, especially in those living with dementia and individuals needing long-term care.

Hsu has expertise in prediction modelling and long-term care research. Since 2019, she has been a Principal Investigator or co-investigator on 50 funded projects, totaling over $185 million in research funding. In 2021, she was awarded the University of Ottawa Faculty of Medicine’s Early-Career Researcher of the Year in Epidemiology and Public Health.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Hsu led the development of the first national report examining the impact of COVID -19 on residents in Canadian long-term care homes. She also represents Canada in an international collaborative focusing on issues affecting residents and workers in long-term care. She is one of the principal scientists leading the development, implementation, and evaluation of RESPECT (Risk Evaluation for Support: Predictions for Elder-Life in their Communities Tool), a predictive tool supporting earlier identification of palliative care needs in older adults in home care and in long-term care. The RESPECT calculator, which is hosted on ProjectBigLife.ca, has been used by over 400,000 users worldwide and has been implemented in home care programs and long-term care homes in several Canadian provinces.

Research Interests:

Long-term care, health care needs of people living with dementia, palliative care, primary care, research using health administrative data, prediction modelling, health economics.
