Bruyère Health Foundation announces successful completion of $6M Celebrating Life at Every Stage Campaign
12/07/2023
Ottawa, ON, December 7, 2023 – Just one year after the launch of its Celebrating Life at Every Stage fundraising campaign, the Bruyère Health Foundation announced during its annual donor reception that thanks to the significant support from the community, the $6 million goal has been reached.
This fundraising campaign enabled the successful move of Bruyère’s palliative care program from its site in the By-Ward Market to its site in Centretown. This move also supported the creation of a new model of care, building on the strengths of Bruyère’s specialized hospital programs in palliative and complex care.
Integral to the success of this Campaign was the generosity of one individual who is well known in our community for his exceptional philanthropy and leadership – William Shenkman. Bruyère is fortunate to have been the beneficiary of many gifts over the years from Bill and his wife Maureen. The former palliative care unit also bore the Shenkman name thanks to Bill’s lead gift to the campaign to upgrade the unit years nearly 18 years ago.
Bruyère is especially grateful that Bill agreed to be the lead donor for this campaign. Bill’s donation honours the legacy of the Sisters of Charity of Ottawa. While visiting the new Shenkman Palliative Care Unit at Bruyère’s Bruyère Health Saint-Vincent Hospital just a few weeks ago, Bill stated “I am pleasantly surprised to see that the staff here are very much keeping the compassionate legacy of the Sisters and Mother Bruyère alive. It’s what really sets Bruyère apart in our community.”
The palliative care program, which moved from the Élisabeth Bruyère site in the ByWard Market site to the Saint-Vincent site in Centretown this summer, continues to deliver the outstanding and deeply compassionate care it is renowned for, building on the strengths of Bruyère’s specialized hospital programs in palliative and complex care.
“Our community came together to help ensure that our patients have the enhanced benefit of receiving the best in palliative and complex care at one site. Our Campaign Cabinet and Board of Directors are extremely proud to have contributed to this important project, benefitting our patients, their loved ones, and our teams.” said Daniel Fernandes, Chair of the Bruyère Health Foundation Board of Directors.
Members of the Campaign Cabinet include Campaign Chair, Brad Ezard, Scott Brooker, Guy Chartrand, Daniel Fernandes, Joanne Kudakiewicz and Nik Lemieux. Acclaimed talk show radio host Steve Madely also lent his support to the campaign as honorary spokesperson.
The Foundation is grateful to everyone who contributed and played a part in making the construction of this new unit a reality, and for helping our patients and their families “Celebrate Life at Every Stage”.
